With almost 200,000 inhabitants, the metropolis of Kassel is the third largest city in the whole of Hessen after Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. Situated directly on the Fulda River, the city presents itself as a modern shopping and business centre, and renowned companies & industries are also located in the surrounding districts. Almost one million people live in the entire region of Northern Hessen.
The region is connected to important rail and road networks within Germany and Europe and is an important logistics location due to its central location. Northern Hessen has a strong tradition as a location for industry and commerce. Today, the region is characterised by a large number of companies, including well-known world market leaders, which are internationally successful in traditional, but also in completely new industries and markets.
Young companies, including spin-offs from the local university, develop innovative business ideas in Kassel and the North Hessian districts and conquer the world markets from here with their special products and internationally sought-after knowledge.
According to the European Commission's "Innovation Scoreboard" published in July 2016, Northern Hessen now belongs to the Champions League of innovation regions, the so-called Innovation Leaders: the region thus plays in a league with London, North Brabant, Jutland or South East England. In the category "Product and Process Innovations in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises", Northern Hessen even occupies first place. The decisive factor for this success is the innovative strength of North Hessian companies. Exemplary for this are investments such as the Science Park Kassel, competitions for start-ups or the expansion of the research infrastructure and not least company investments in research and development.
In addition to industry and research, the cultural sector is also important, with the largest modern art exhibition, documenta, attracting the international art scene to Kassel every five years.
